A message from the United Left chair to members about our online hustings

Steve Turner and Howard Beckett
Spread the love

Invites to Saturday”s United Left General Secretary hustings have gone out.

Today (Friday 17 July) United Left members will receive a separate email allowing them to vote after the hustings are scheduled to finish at 12.30pm on Saturday.

This email link will only go live at the end of the hustings on Saturday and will stay live for a period of four hours, until 4.30pm. Members can vote at any time during this period.

There are only two candidates: Steve Turner, Unite AGS and Howard Beckett, Unite AGS. You will have one vote. This voting process is by an independent company.

No candidate or other third parties will be able to see which way individual members vote, your vote is completely anonymous.

This hustings is an opportunity for both candidates to present to us  their experience, qualities and vision to persuade us of their ability to stand as the voice of the left to run our great union, an industrial union with members in all sectors of the UK and Irish economy.

Our union is facing enormous challenges stemming from the Covid-19 crisis and the shambolic behaviour of this Tory government.

The UL is fully behind our leadership, the UL is still the largest group on our EC, and Len McCluskey will continue to lead the union.

The UL will learn the lessons of the falling participation at recent national elections within the union and will seek to develop a new vision strengthening our lay-led membership input while working with our present GS and the successful UL GS candidate.

There is a need within our trade union movement to reenergise and rebuild our activist base, we are first and foremost a union which must have a strong presence in industry. Without a strong industrial base, we will be unable to influence UK politics.

Please participate, listen to both candidates on Saturday and use your vote.
