While delighted to see the back of the Tories, this new Labour government has not got off to a flying start regarding those of us who have contributed to the economy of this country all our working lives. Removing the Winter Fuel Allowance from millions is a slap in the face and it is right that our Union is campaigning to reverse this regressive policy.
We would not need allowances if our pensions were set at a realistic level.
Throughout my working life as a senior activist within our Union, I fought to improve members’ terms and conditions and demanded a real living wage. As retired workers, we need a Real Living Pension to assure our dignity and comfort. Shamefully in the world’s sixth biggest economy, UK pensioners rank fifteenth in the European league table of pension provision, with France 50 per cent higher, Spain three times and Luxembourg five times our rate.
Pensioners have been fighting hard for a better deal. We can significantly shape the results of General elections, so Politicians need to understand that we will no longer be fobbed off with means-tested credits and allowances.
• Crucially, I will fight to address the disgraceful gender inequality that exists for women’s pensions, and demand we redouble our efforts to support the WASPI women, cheated out of thousands of pounds.
• And I will never shrink from calling on Unite to be far more visible in the fight for the rights of the Palestinian people.
Retired members have so much to contribute to our great Union, but to do so, we need a strong voice on the Executive Council. If elected, I will provide that strong voice. I will demand more campaigning resources, transparency and equality and will ensure regular feedback.
Thank-you
