Packed Policy Conference fringe meeting – featuring the “31” majority on the Unite Executive Council

THE STRUGGLE FOR A DEMOCRATIC LAY-MEMBER LED UNION

Last night’s fringe meeting of the ‘31’—a group of Unite the Union EC members who hold the majority on the Executive Council—was extremely well attended, demonstrating strong engagement from members and supporters. The 31 come from the United Left and other left-aligned groups on the EC.

“Honesty is MUCH the best policy!”

Speakers reiterated the importance of openness and honesty about crucial matters concerning the union’s accounts and financial transparency.

All of them emphasised that, despite facing political attacks on their positions, they remain committed to representing members and defending their interests above all else.

A key theme of the discussion was the principle that “honesty is the best policy”—both in internal union governance and in external campaigning.

We demand accountability and member-led decision making

The group reaffirmed its dedication to accountability and member-led decision-making, reinforcing solidarity among those present.

The meeting concluded with a resolve to continue advocating for transparency, integrity, and militant trade unionism in Unite’s leadership.
