The Starmer government has bowed to pressure from campaigners – and sadly from the Reform party – and changed direction on the Winter Fuel Payments it so cruelly snatched away from pensioners last winter.
Under increasing electoral pressure from Reform, and in an attempt to win back pensioners’ votes, the government announced that all pensioners with an income of £35,000 or less a year will have the winter fuel payment restored in full. The payments will be restored as a universal benefit this coming winter. Higher income pensioners will lose the money when they fill in their tax returns.
