Certification Officer tells Unite General Secretary to produce the union’s accounts

Many good activists in Unite have been concerned for some time at the failure of the union to produce its financial accounts since the current General Secretary came to office in August 2021. And this failure is in the face of repeated assurances from the top of the Union that this would soon be rectified.

This has meant that accounts have not been subject to scrutiny by the union’s Executive Council for almost four years, as required by the union’s Rule Book – and basic general principles of democracy.

One of our Executive Council members (who also happens to be one of the majority 31 EC members who recently voted to remove the union Chair for what many believe to be his undemocratic behaviour) exercised his right to report the General Secretary to the Certification Officer for this failure to produce the union’s accounts.

The United Left is pleased that members will now be able to properly scrutinise the accounts but is disappointed that it has taken a decision by the Certification Officer to force this.

See below posts from X (formerly Twitter) account “Reunite the Union” further explaining the decision.
